Bengaluru : Skill development for students in its schools and rejuvenation of lakes will be key component of the next Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike budget (BBMP).
The civic agency has begun an exercise to prepare the draft of the budget for the financial year 2017-18. The budget will be ready in two weeks. The Palike is even contemplating seeking public opinion on the budget this year.
Sources in the Taxation and Finance Committee said students of corporation schools are from economically weaker sections and many students drop out. In the absence of studies, most students become unemployed and get drawn to crime.
“Keeping these in mind, we have decided to give more focus on skill development courses. We want to introduce these programmes from the next academic year in some select schools. In later years, it can be extended to other schools as well,” said a Palike official.
He said such skill development programmes, called Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW), existed in the government schools but were wound up later. BBMP is even contemplating roping in big corporates to contribute under their corporate social responsibility (CSR).
