Coimbatore: Bharathiar University is all set to launch certification courses on skill development for students of affiliated government colleges. The courses would be conducted through the entrepreneurship development hub the university is setting up under the Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) phase-II fund. University officials said this would be the first initiative on which BU would be spending the fund.
Of the Rs 15 crore sanctioned under the RUSA-II scheme for setting up the hub, the state government has handed over Rs 3 crore to the university. It is awaiting another Rs 4.5 crore sanctioned by the Centre. Of the 14 government arts colleges affiliated to the university, eight have responded to conduct the courses, said R Saravana Selvan, co-ordinator of RUSA at BU. “The skill training courses are modelled on the framework set by the National Skill Development Corporation. They comprise both theory and practicals and are for 100 hours. Candidates, who undertake them, would be given a course completion certificate. There would be no exams as we won’t charge any fee,” he told TOI.

Initially, we are planning to give Rs 1 lakh seed money to each of the eight colleges,” Selvan added.
Rupa Gunaseelan, nodal officer for the entrepreneurial hub under RUSA-II, said government arts colleges in Coimbatore, Ooty, Gudalur, Pollachi, Valparai and Tirupur have shown interest in the courses. “They have chosen beauty and wellness, IT and applications, finance and management, textile and apparel and life sciences. To complete the curriculum of 100 hours, we have to conduct classes for two months,” she said. The programme will be launched next week.
