Madurai : Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, the nodal agency for skill training in the State, would soon roll out district-specific skill development training plans for all the districts after getting the ‘skill gap study’ report later this month, its Executive Director V Vishnu has said.
Mr. Vishnu, who was here on Tuesday to distribute Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) certificates to workers in the construction sector, told that Price Waterhouse Coopers, an UK-based consulting company engaged by the Corporation, had completed the skill gap study and would submit its report later this month.
The study was undertaken in all the 32 districts after it was found that there was mismatch of supply and demand of skill from the job market, he said. The professional study was aimed at ascertaining the demand of the industries and available skill level of youth in each district, he said.
As the demand for skilled workers varied from district to district as per the needs of local industries, the TNSDC would roll out district-specific skill development training programmes for youth, he said. “This is a challenging task as we need to assess the job potentials – current and future in each district and the aspirations of youth,” he said.
There was no point in rolling out uniform skill development training programmes, he said adding the Corporation decided to focus on fisheries and tourism sectors, which had huge potential for employment generation in the coastal district. Mr. Vishnu held talks with Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao and Additional Director of Fisheries (Ramanathapuram) Johny Tom Varghese in this regard.

He said the Corporation offered skill development training to 1.40 lakh youth in the State last year and proposed to cover 1.50 lakh youth this year. Central government organisations and private companies had been empanelled to offer certified skill development training. Those who had studied up to Class V and in the age group of 18 to 45 years could avail the skill development training, he added.
Automobiles, manufacturing and capital goods, construction, infrastructure, health, tourism and hospitality sectors have been identified as potential job creating sectors across the State, he said. Pointing that the Corporation had been formed to transform the State into a skill hub, he said the day was not far off when Tamil Nadu would emerge as the skill capital of the country.
