New Delhi: TERI University in collaboration with Bharat Coking Coal Limited ( BCCL ) and CMPDI Ranchi conducted two training programmes on goatry and poultry farming for the local communities in Muriadih Coillery, Dhanbad from 21-23 September , 2016. These training were conducted under a project funded by Ministry of Coal namely Sustainable Livelihood activities Reclaimed open cast mines: Technology Enabled Integrated Approach in Indian Coal Sector of the BCCL Muraidih project.This project was being implemented jointly by TERI University, Delhi and CMPDI, Ranchi.
The main objective of this program was the Eco-restoration work in the mined and degraded land and also skill development plan taking into account the economically weaker sections in rural areas by providing them training for self-employment. Besides imparting the specific skills, the training programme also aims to motivate them to become financially self-reliant entrepreneurs. The training programmes were inaugurated by Shri Shiv Ram Vasundhara, Project Officer, Muraidih Coillery.
Around 50 people from the local communities participated in both the training programmes. Dr. Sapna A. Narula, Associate Professor, TERI University who is leading the component on livelihoods told the BCCL team and the participants about the inception of the programmes. She also briefed that for these livelihood training programmes have been designed after a need-assessment survey was undertaken amongst the local communities. TERI University will be conducting these skill development programmes in various areas such as poultry, fishery, mushroom cultivation, goatry, sewing-knitting, beautician, welding and electrical repairs over a period of next one year. A few programmes have been designed keeping in view the specific needs of women folk in the region. Besides this, the team will also provide hand-holding facilities to the participants for setting up their own micro-enterprises.
BCCL Eco-restoration in-charge Mr. Rajkumar, Senior Manager, Environment Department, BCCL, focused on the forestry activities being implemented by TERI University team on the mined and degraded land under this project . He informed how these activities are aiming for biodiversity conservation and Eco-restoration in the region. Dr E V R Raju, Deputy Manager, Environment Department, BCCL, appreciated the efforts of TERI University team , Delhi.
