Gandhinagar : Despite tall claims of giving jobs to the unemployed, and skill development to enhance employability of the youth in the state, Gujarat ranked poor 15th in the country, according to the a recent report released by the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship.
Replying to a question by Rajya Sabha MP Pratap Singh Bajwa, Union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship Anant Kumar Hedge presented state-wise number of candidates enrolled, trained, assessed, certified and placed under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)2016-20, as on January 24, 2019. Gujarat figured at the 15th place in the report among some other worst performing states and Union territories. Under the scheme, placement tracking is mandatory.
The placement data is reported within 90 days of issuing training certificates to the candidates. The report mentioned that as on January 24, 2019, 21.03 lakh candidates were certified under the various schemes of PMKVY 2016-20. The number of candidates certified 90 days prior was 19.39 lakh. Of these, 10.64 lakh (55%) were placed in various sectors across the country.
When asked about Gujarat’s poor performance, additional chief secretary, labour & employment, Vipul Mittra, said, “Since 2011, we have been running a similar scheme from the state budget under which one lakh youngsters get training and jobs every year. Kaushal Vardhak Kendra (skill development centre) gets good response at places where there is no ITI (industrial training institute). As we have good number of ITIs, youngsters prefer ITIs over the KVK. Government of India also knows this fact.”
